  • We would recommend that the first thing you do is take the dog to the nearest vet who will scan the dog free of charge to discover if the dog is micro-chipped. The vet will then contact the owner and give them your contact details. The vet is not allowed to reveal details of the owner under the Data Protection Act 1998. Sometimes a micro-chipped dog cannot be returned to the owner because the owner has moved address and their details are no longer up to date. It is a legal requirement to inform the Dog Warden if you have found a dog so that the owner can find it. You must give a description of the dog and where it was found. The Dog Warden will then register the details you have supplied and issue you with a log number. The Dog Warden will arrange to come to your premises to collect the dog. If the Dog Warden is unable to collect the dog immediately, you may need to care for the dog or take it to an authorised dog shelter.
